Since Longmont’s early days as a Chicago-Colorado colony, the climate and rich soil have provided for an agriculturally based community. One of the great achievements of this Chicago colony was the building of an expansive network of irrigation ditches bringing water to farmers and some of the first flour mills in Colorado. In the late 1880’s a cannery was opened. Due to great success with sugar beet production, in 1903, Great Western Sugar Co. opened their sugar beet factory.
A growing population of 81,169 has provided the workforce for Amgen, IBM, Seagate, Xitech, Conoco Phillips (scheduled opening in 2012), Covidien, and other high tech area employers. Families moving into the area will find a warm welcome through Newcomers Clubs, area places of worship, community festivals, theater and symphony events, art studio tours, and outdoor concert performances throughout the city’s prolific city park system.
